EMAIL BLOCKS: Sample letter follows. Full contact info at end of alert.
=============================================================

Hey, this is one heck of a BIG contact list!
Still, its size doesn’t compare to the millions of kangaroos slaughtered
annually in Australia. Sure, clicking on a petition is easier… But we ask
you to take a bit more time to copy each email block into a TO: or BCC: line
of your email — to personally send comments. The impact is so much BIGGER.

Honorable Officials of Australia:

Australia’s assault on its national icon is disgraceful. In May 2009, the
Department of Defense began to gun down 7,000 kangaroos on its vast Majura
military base in Canberra, ACT. By 5/14/09, with 3500 already dead, a
court-issued injunction temporarily stopped the massacre.

Wildlife culls are permitted to take up to 10,000 kangaroos per night. Where
is the Australian government’s moral compass? Please stop authorized culls
and commercial kills. I urge officials to respect and accommodate indigenous
wildlife with more national parks, nature reserves, and protected land
corridors for animals to get there.

In Australia, the internationally beloved kangaroo has become an article of
trade — to buy and sell by way of violent death. A 4/23/09 Daily Telegraph
report says “tens of thousands of joeys will be decapitated, shot or clubbed
to death” under government orders to open commercial shoots across a
generous swath of New South Wales.

The National Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and
Wallabies advises that babies found in a slain mother’s pouch be decapitated
with a sharp blade; clubbed with a metal pipe; or slammed against a firm
object. Older joeys are bludgeoned or shot at point blank range.

Hunters spotlight kangaroos in the outback at night. They aim for their
brains, but often miss and leave kangaroos with gaping head and mouth
wounds. Along with nearly four million kangaroos commercially killed each
year, hundreds of thousands of joeys die hideously.

I respectfully ask the government to phase out its consumptive use of
kangaroos and consider eco-tourism instead. Plainly stated, Australia’s
largest known slaughter of land wildlife is sickening.

Thank you,

  1. Good luck! I can’t get any response from the Government after I was shot.

If they don’t care about a citizen getting shot abroad, why would they care about animals getting shot at home?

  2. it is wrong to continue killling & harming animals , it is very bad human behaviour , & animals deserve much better help .
as well , this killing is increasing hot climate .
altruistic & other alternatives could found .

  3. This slaughter of Kangaroos has now been going on for several years.I fail to understand why a country should set about the mass killing of it’s national symbol in such a manner. However perhaps we should not be to surprised after all the state Government of South Australia allow the Japanese whalers free rein in the Southern Whale Sanctuary despite the fact that this action is a breach of international law and this government could put an end to it right now if they had the will.I do pray and hope that this petition to save the Kangaroo is a resounding success.I wonder if people know this saaughter is nothing to do with consevation at all, but is a lucrative buissness where the meat from Kangaroo’s is turned into pet food.I also suspect that some of the imported tinned meat from Australia also contains Kangaroo meat quite disgusting it’s enough to make your hair on end.

  4. Why has my comment been blocked I see nothing wrong with it it is the truth.

    • Thank you for your comment. We appreciate your input. Your comment has been posted.

  7. Good on you for mobilising the international community and providing such a rich list of action resources. Australia’s kangaroo cull is a stark reminder of how bloody-minded and ignorant humans can be to the suffering of other animals. Many of the problems animals have in Australia are man-made – such as drought and the introduction of non-native species without proper foresight – yet humans always seem to be the last species to suffer from their own poor behaviour.

There is a lot of animal rights activity going on in Australia, but it’s invaluable to have the additional weight of overseas support.
